NID Entrance Exam Pattern

In order to secure admissions in design programmes on offer at NID, aspirants need to clear two stages which are:

• Stage 1: NID DAT (Prelims) – Pen & paper based written test
• Stage 2: NID DAT (Mains) – Studio Test and Personal Interview

The DAT Prelims happens to be a 3 hour paper divided into two parts: Objective type with 40 marks questions and subjective type with sketching questions worth 60 marks. The pattern stays the same for both B.Des and M. Des.

DAT Mains is further divided into two parts: Studio test for B.Design students and Studio test, SOP submission and Interview for M.Design students. Only candidates who successfully clear the prelims are invited to the mains. The studio tests involve students taking up hands-on assignments to finish within the given time.

Applicants who clear the mains move onto counselling and confirm their admission to the institute.

Though good sketching is essential, the questions are framed to judge a candidate’s creativity, imagination & visualization skills, observation, general awareness etc. So, developing these skills are equally important.

NID Studio Test / NID DAT Mains 2023

NID Studio test compromises of an important  component in the DAT Mains apart from the personal interview. Studio test is held at NID campuses along with test centres in major cities such as Delhi, Pune & Kolkata. All of 100 marks, the test comes in varied formats such as hands-on practical assignments for B. Des aspirants.

For M. Des students, the studio test is conducted separately for different disciplines at the NID Campuses where the program is offered. The personal interview culminates with the studio test.

Portfolio / Personal Interview for NID Admission

NID too require,  like most design schools a portfolio that gives the panel a parameter  to judge the student’s creativity. Any relevant artwork of the candidate should suffice, right from his or her childhood to the current time. A portfolio is a great yardstick to judge a student’s creativity based on the concept of the artwork and the arrangement of the works. NID 2023 Application Form

Registration for a NID admission is as follows:

1. Visit http://admissions.nid.edu and sign up
2. Sign up and do the Registration
3. Fill in the Online Application Form with necessary details; click ‘save & proceed’
4. Upload the mandatory documents and signature
5. Choose a payment option and pay
6. Download the application form and print it.

NID Application Process

Application forms for NID admission will be available from the 1st week of October 2022 for the academic year 2023-2024, at http://admissions.nid.edu. The  submission of online application forms has to be done latest by the last week of Nov 2022. Any editing to the NID application forms has to be done by the 2nd week of December 2022. The exam will be held in the 1st week of January 2023. The result will be out (Tentatively by 2^nd week March of 2023). The NID DAT result shall be available on the official website.

Uploading required documents

It’s mandatory for Students to submit the following when filling in the NID admission form:

• Scanned recent passport- size photograph in JPG/JPEG format and size should be minimum 75KB and maximum 100KB
• Scanned signature in JPG/JPEG format and size should be minimum 75KB and maximum 100KB
• Caste or OBC-NCL certificate (whichever applicable) in JPG/JPEG format and size should be minimum 75KB and maximum 150KB
• Disability certificate, if applicable, in JPG/JPEG format and size should be minimum 75KB and maximum 150KB
• Scanned copy of first and last pages of passport for overseas applicants
• Certificates of educational qualifications

Payment of NID Application Form

NID  applicants can pay their application fee for both Online gateway (debit/credit cards) Rs. 3000 is the fees for General category, General -EWS, OBC-NCL, Rs. 5000 for oversea pursuant and Rs. 1500 for SC, ST, PwD categories.

About NID Admit Card

NID admit card is released by officials of National Institute of Design (NID) on the official website of the entrance exam. Aspirants can download NID DAT admit card online from NID entrance exam’s official website. Candidates need to note that NID Entrance Exam admit card would only be issued to them if they have successfully completed and duly submitted NID application form.

NID admission process comprises of three rounds that aspirants need to clear – NID DAT, Studio Test and Interview round. Here, NID Design Aptitude Test is known as NID DAT Prelims and the Studio Test as well as the interview round is collectively referred to as NID DAT Mains exam. Thus, candidates are informed that separate admit cards would be issued to them for NID DAT (Prelims) and NID DAT (Mains) examinations.

NID DAT admit card is a mandatory document that aspirants need to carry to their NID entrance exam test centre. No candidate will be allowed to appear for NID DAT Prelims or Mains exam if they are not carrying a valid NID hall ticket on the day of the examination.

About NID Cut Off

National Institute of Design releases the NID DAT (Prelims) 2021 cut off for BDes and MDes course. The cut off for NID DAT (Prelims) is the score of the last candidate in order of the merit who is shortlisted for DAT Mains. The official website also informs: “Based on the categroy-wise merit lits of DAT (Pelims), the number of candidates shortlisted for DAT (mains) in each category, in each discipline is five times the number of available seats in each category, in the respective discipline”.

All candidates need to meet NID DAT cutoff in order to secure admission in design courses offered at National Institute of Design (NID). Separate NID entrance exam cut-offs are released for NID DAT Prelims and NID DAT Mains exam. NID DAT Prelims result for BDes, MDes and GDPD course is usually declared in the month of February each year. Only candidates who meet NID DAT Prelims cut-off are eligible to take part in Studio Test and Interview round for NID admissions.

Separate cut-offs for NID entrance exam are released for candidates belonging to different categories, such as – General, Other Backward Classes- Non Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL), Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Persons with Disability (PwD) and Supernumerary.

NID DAT Mains Result

Few aspects that aspirants need to pay attention to with respect to the result for NID DAT Mains for BDes, MDes and GDPD course admissions is as follows:

For NID DAT Mains for MDes course admissions: Based on the category-wise merit list of DAT (Prelims); the number of candidates shortlisted for DAT (Mains) in each category and discipline is five times the number of available seats in each category and respective discipline.

For NID DAT Mains for BDes/GDPD course admissions: Based on the category-wise merit list of DAT (Pelims); the number of candidates shortlisted for DAT (Mains) in each category is 3.5 times the number of available seats in each category in the respective discipline.

Below, candidates can view NID cut offs for 2020, 2021 and 2022. NID cutoffs are determined in such a way that the score of the last candidate who has been offered admission in a particular course in a given year are considered to be NID DAT cutoff. Candidates are informed that all the scores mention in the table below are evaluated out of 100.

About NID Result

NID 2023 Result will be announced Online. NID conducts its exam in two phases. Phase I consists of DAT Prelims while Phase II consists of DAT (Design Aptitude Test) Mains. On the basis of these exams, students are selected for all the seven NID campuses. NID offers professional educational programs for bachelor and masters’s levels with five faculty streams and 19 design domains. Currently, a Ph.D. Programme of 5 years has been introduced by the NID campus at Ahmedabad.

The NID Results 2023 will be declared through online mode only. There is no other mode available to download the NID scorecard. The scorecard is considered valid for the current year only. The candidate needs to log in to the official website and enter their registered details to check their result of NID on https://www.nid.edu/home. The candidates are advised not to misplace their Admit card as it is the only source to check NID Results 2023.

All the details including the qualifying status are mentioned on the candidate’s scorecard. Later on, the cut-offs for all categories are released by the authorities. After the declaration of NID Result 2022, NID Cut Off 2023 will be declared online. The results will be separate for each category. For the reserved category, there will be relaxation in cut-offs.

The admission process for NID 2023 dates will be announced, once the NID Results 2023 are declared.
