About National Institute of Design
National Institute of Design (NID) is an ‘Institute of National Importance’ as per the NID Act 2014 as well as an autonomous institute under the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India. As per the NID Act (18 of 2014), the institute is a statutory authority empowered to award its own degrees—Masters of Design (M.Des.) of two-and-a-half years duration and Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) of four-year duration. The Institute is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
NID Vijayawada is an independent autonomous institute under the DIPP, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India and offers four-year long Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD).
NID Kurukshetra is an independent autonomous institute under the DIPP, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India and offers four-year long Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD).
Admission to all of the design courses will be granted on the basis of a two-stage competitive exam. The objective of these exams is to assess the knowledge, skills and behavioural abilities of candidates.
Education at NID
NID offers professional education programmes at Bachelors and Masters level with five faculty streams and 20 diverse design domains.NID has established exchange programmes and ongoing pedagogic relationships with more than 55 overseas institutions. NID has also been playing a significant role in promoting design.
Having entered the 6th decade of design excellence, NID has been active as an autonomous institute under the aegis of the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion,Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India; in education,applied research, service and advanced training in five faculty streams,Industrial Design, Communication Design, Textile, Apparel & Lifestyle Design, IT Integrated (Experiential) Design and Interdisciplinary Design Studies. NID offers a wide spectrum of design domains while encouraging transdisciplinary design projects.NID is a unique institution with many problem-solving capabilities, depths of intellect and a time-tested creative educational culture in promoting design competencies and setting standards of design education. The rigorous development of the designer’s skills and knowledge through a process of ‘hands on-minds on’ is what makes the difference.
The overall structure of NID’s programme is a combination of theory, skills, design projects and field experiences supported by cutting edge design studios, skill & innovation labs and the Knowledge Management Centre. Sponsored design projects are brought into the classroom to provide professional experience.Interdisciplinary design studies in Science and Liberal Arts widen the students’ horizons and increase general awareness of contemporary issues.
Bachelor of Design ( B. Des. )

Note:
• The first year of this programme is a mandatory foundation course, only after which students can select their specialisation based on their performance and on the number of seats available.
• Number of seats for Indian Nationals in Bachelor of Design programme, including reserved categories is One Hundred (100).
• Prescribed percentage of seats are reserved for candidates (Indian nationals) belonging to various reserved categories as per the Government of India guidelines (See Section 5 for more information).
• The total number of seats for overseas (supernumerary) candidates is Fifteen (15).
Master of Design ( M. Des. )
The two-and-a-half year long Master of Design (M.Des.) programme at NID is offered at its campuses in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Gandhinagar. Students may apply in any of the following disciplines:
