Important Information about CEED
The Common Entrance Exam for Design (CEED) is conducted by IIT Bombay to evaluate a candidate’s aptitude for design — covering visual perception, drawing ability, logical reasoning, creativity, communication, and problem-solving. It is the gateway to Master of Design (M.Des) programmes at IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, IIITDM Jabalpur, and IIITDM Kancheepuram, as well as PhD programmes at several participating institutes.A CEED score alone does not guarantee admission. Each admitting institute independently shortlists candidates and may conduct additional tests or interviews before making a final offer. Eligibility, category certificates, and other documents are verified at the time of admission. The CEED 2027 score will be valid for one year from the date of result declaration.

CEED Paper Pattern 2027
The CEED exam is conducted in English and consists of two parts — Part A and Part B — held on the same day. Both parts are compulsory. Part A runs from 9:00 am to 10:00 am, followed immediately by Part B from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.
CEED Part A
Part A is a computer-based objective test covering visual and spatial ability, environmental and social awareness, analytical and logical reasoning, language, and observation and design sensitivity.
Part A is of 1 hour duration and carries a total of 150 marks. The paper has 44 questions divided into three sections:
- NAT (Numerical Answer Type):
8 questions of 4 marks each, with no negative marking. Answers are entered as numbers using a virtual keyboard — no options are shown. - MSQ (Multiple Select Questions):
10 questions of 4 marks each. One or more options may be correct. A partial marking scheme applies, and a negative marking of –1 applies in all other incorrect cases. - MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions):
26 questions of 3 marks each, with four options and only one correct answer. A negative marking of –0.5 marks applies for each incorrect answer. Unattempted questions carry no penalty.
CEED Part B
Part B tests design thinking, drawing ability, and written communication. Questions are displayed on a computer screen, but answers must be written and drawn in an answer booklet provided by the invigilator.
There are 5 compulsory questions in Part B. It carries 100 marks over 2 hours. Partial marking is applicable and there is no negative marking.
Note: Part A and Part B must each be completed within their respective time limits.
CEED Syllabus 2027
CEED 2027 consists of two parts — Part A and Part B.
Part A covers the following topics:
- Visualization and spatial reasoning: Ability to visualise and transform 2D shapes and 3D objects and understand their spatial relationships.
- Practical and scientific knowledge: Understanding of scientific principles and how everyday objects work.
- Observation and design sensitivity: Ability to notice and think critically about properties in everyday objects, situations, and environments — including attention to detail, classification, analysis, inference, and prediction.
- Environment and society: General awareness of environmental, social, and cultural connections with design.
- Analytical and logical reasoning: Ability to analyse qualitative and quantitative information logically.
- Language: Proficiency in reading and comprehending Standard English.
- Creativity: Ability to grasp verbal and non-verbal analogies, metaphors, signs, and symbols.
- Art and design knowledge: Awareness of art, artefacts, products, artists, designers, art and design history, and current trends.
- Design methods and practices: Knowledge of materials, production processes, media, and ergonomics.
Part B covers the following topics:
- Drawing: Ability to draw products, people, or scenes in proportion — with attention to line quality, composition, perspective, and shading.
- Creativity: Ability to think beyond the obvious and generate diverse, original solutions.
- Communication skills: Ability to convey concepts and ideas clearly through a combination of text and visuals.
- Problem identification skills: Ability to understand user needs and context; knowledge of material properties and their appropriate application in design.
Note: The topics listed above are indicative of the nature of questions. The CEED may not cover every listed topic in a given year.
CEED Result 2027
The CEED 2027 result is expected to be declared in early March 2027 on the official CEED website. Candidates can log in using their registration number and application number (or email ID and password) to view and download their scorecard.
All candidates who meet the Part A cut-off will receive an All India Rank and be considered qualified. The CEED 2027 score will remain valid for one year from the date of declaration.
How to Check CEED 2027 Result
Step 1: Visit the official CEED website
Step 2: Click on the “CEED 2027 Result” link
Step 3: Enter your email ID and password, or registration number and application number
Step 4: View your result and download the scorecard
Step 5: Save a copy of the scorecard for future reference — hard copies are not dispatched by post
Important: A CEED rank is a qualifying score, not a guarantee of admission. Each institute that accepts CEED scores — IISc, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, and others — runs its own admissions process. Shortlisted candidates must separately apply to each institute, meet their eligibility criteria, and appear for any additional written test or interview the institute requires. Admission offers are made entirely at the discretion of the individual institutes.
Mumbai’s Creative Ecosystem for CEED Preparation at BRDS
Mumbai functions as an extended observation studio for CEED aspirants. A railway station, market, public building, exhibition venue, street, or neighbourhood can reveal how people interact with objects, spaces, signs, materials, and visual information across the city.
For any Mumbai-based CEED aspirant, the city’s diverse environments provide opportunities to turn everyday observation into sketching, visual analysis, design research, and problem-identification exercises directly relevant to the examination.
| Mumbai Landmark / Space | Relevance to CEED Preparation |
|---|---|
| Kala Ghoda Art Precinct | Exposure to public art, murals, and design installations — helps sharpen observation and visual analysis |
| Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) | Gothic-Victorian architecture and ornamentation — useful for form study and sketching practice |
| Bandra Street Art Lanes | Contemporary illustration and typography styles — builds creative and visual thinking |
| Dharavi | Informal manufacturing and material reuse — insight into design problem-solving and sustainability |
| Crawford Market | Density of materials, textures, and product design — aids visualisation exercises |
| Colaba Causeway & Markets | Everyday product and packaging design — supports user behaviour and branding observation |
| Juhu Beach & Marine Drive | Public space design and human interaction patterns — relevant to service and experience design thinking |
| Mumbai Local Trains | Systems thinking and user flow — useful for analytical and logical reasoning practice |
| Prithvi Theatre & NCPA | Set, spatial, and experience design exposure — builds creativity and conceptual thinking |
| Phoenix Marketcity / High Street Phoenix | Retail branding, wayfinding, and spatial design — relevant to design aptitude and analytical skills |
Note: The locations above are suggested observation environments rather than official CEED preparation venues. Their purpose is to give students examples of places where they can practise observation, sketching, visual analysis, design thinking, and problem identification.
BRDS has design coaching centres across Mumbai including Dadar, Andheri, Borivali, Thane, Vashi, Charni Road, Kalyan, Mulund, Vasai, Ghatkopar, Goregaon, Ghodbunder, Kharghar, Bandra West, Powai, and Kandivali East. Students can explore these locations and choose the centre that is most convenient for their preparation.
Turning a Visit into CEED Practice
A creative outing becomes more useful when students actively observe rather than simply photograph what they see. Turn every Mumbai visit — a market, a railway station, an exhibition, a public space — into a live design brief.
What problem does this space solve?
Where do people hesitate or get confused?
How could the signage or layout be improved?
What shapes, textures, materials, or patterns repeat around you?
How does colour affect the way the space is perceived?
Can you sketch the same object or structure from three different viewpoints?
How could you redesign an everyday object for a different user?
This approach can turn Mumbai’s everyday environments into regular CEED Entrance Exam practice while strengthening observation, visualisation, problem identification, and design communication.
Essential Materials for CEED Preparation
Since CEED is for M.Des. aspirants, the material list below focuses on tools that support ideation, portfolio development, and concept presentation. Students can also refer to the official BRDS CEED Study Material for structured practice resources.
| Material | Use in CEED Preparation |
|---|---|
| Sketchbook | Ideation, concept development, and visual thinking |
| HB, 2B & 4B Pencils | Sketching and shading |
| Fine Liners | Detailing and presentation sketches |
| Colour Pencils | Rendering concepts and product illustrations |

| Sticky Notes | Brainstorming and design thinking exercises |
| Portfolio Folder | Organising projects, case studies, and portfolio work |
Materials can be introduced according to the exercise, allowing students to gradually build comfort with both two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms. The official CEED website also provides previous question papers, which can be used to understand the examination’s question styles and practice requirements.

The purpose of CEED preparation is therefore not simply to improve drawing. It is to develop the ability to observe problems, generate ideas, explore alternatives, and communicate possible solutions.
Practice CEED Entrance Exam Questions
Before joining a preparation programme, students can use short practice questions to understand the type of thinking involved in CEED. Try the three questions below to feel the range of CEED Part A reasoning.
A rectangular sheet measuring 12 cm × 8 cm is divided into the largest possible equal squares without leaving any part of the sheet unused. How many squares are formed?
The largest square that can divide both dimensions exactly is 4 cm × 4 cm (the highest common factor of 12 and 8).
Along the 12 cm side: 12 ÷ 4 = 3
Along the 8 cm side: 8 ÷ 4 = 2
3 × 2 = 6 squares
This question practises numerical and spatial reasoning relevant to the objective component of CEED.
A designer is developing a handheld tool intended for repeated use. Which factors should be considered when designing its handle?Select all that apply.
A repeatedly used product should account for ergonomics, grip, posture and ease of control. Visual appearance can also contribute to product design, but appearance alone does not address the functional requirements of the handle.
This question connects with CEED’s coverage of design methods and practices, materials, production processes and ergonomics.
A chair in a public waiting area shows significantly more wear on one side of its seat. Which observation would be most useful when investigating why?
Observing actual user behaviour can help reveal why wear occurs in a particular location. The observation may indicate a repeated sitting posture or interaction pattern.
The question focuses on observation, analysis and design sensitivity, which are specifically included in the CEED Part A syllabus.
What These Questions Test
| Question Type | Skill Being Practised |
|---|---|
| NAT — Numerical Answer Type | Numerical reasoning and spatial thinking |
| MCQ — Multiple Choice Question | Design thinking and problem identification |
| MSQ — Multi-Select Question | Observation and interpretation |
| Design Drawing — Part B | Visualisation, functionality, and communication |
The latest published CEED pattern provides separate Part A and Part B components, with Part A testing areas including visual and spatial ability, analytical and logical reasoning, observation, and design sensitivity, while Part B tests design, drawing, and writing skills.
This is how CEED preparation moves beyond memorisation. At BRDS, students practise identifying the problem, interpreting the information, generating possibilities, and communicating their reasoning.
